History
of development
Our
computer-aided instruction first began in the second semester of the 1968 academic
year, when we installed IBM1130 in our center.
In September of 1982 (the 1982 academic
year), we had utilized the 8-bits personal computers in the Introduction to
Computer Science classes for students in Colleges of Liberal Arts, College of
Business and College of Management. Since then, our computer equipments and
utilities have been renewed to pull alongside with current educational needs
and modern technology trends.
Currently, the following classes provided
within all eight colleges (including College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering,
Business, Management, Foreign Languages and Literature, Technology and College
of International Studies) mainly use PCs that the Information Processing Center
provides in students' laboratory sessions: Introduction to Information Processing,
Information Management, Applications of Computer, and Chinese and English Word
Processing.
Starting in the 2001 academic year, the
Center has combined its Education Section and Education Training Section into
the Education Support Section. Besides providing supports for computer-aided
instruction, the Education Support Section is also responsible for planning
and implementing Professional Training on Computer and its related matters.
Current
Situations
The
Information Processing Center has provided 15 computer laboratories for breadth
computer laboratory classes. Among the 15 computer laboratories, 12 are on Tamsui
campus, and 3 are on Taipei campus.
The 12 computer laboratories on Tamsui campus
are located throughout the Business Management Building, and Engineering Building.
One of the 12 computer laboratories are opened 24 hours.
Software
used in Computer Laboratory
Tamsui Campus:
All software are suggested by the Department
of Information Engineering and the Department of Information Management and
are purchased and installed by the Information Processing Center. Current software
installed differs from the purposes of different Computer laboratories.
PC Laboratory
Management
Each
PC Laboratory has a student employee, who is in charge of student users' station
arrangements and managements in the laboratory. There are also other technical
services in the laboratories to efficiently meet users' needs and requests.
Computer
Repair
The
Center has a repair unit that provides repair works to PCs in the Center, as
well as providing repair services to all units on campus.
Education
Training
The
triple objectives - Globalization, Information-oriented Education, and Future-oriented
Education - are visions that Tamkang University has been striving for. In order
to achieve an information-oriented education, faculty training becomes a very
important task. Therefore, improving computer skills of the faculty members
also becomes one of the major tasks that the Information Processing Center executes.
1. Tamkang University "Faculty Information-oriented Education Training"
course
2. "In-Service Teacher Information Application Training" course, entrusted
by the Ministry of Education
3. General Computer courses
